Claire S. Banister, LCSW
Claire Banister is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 35 years experience in counseling individuals, couples, families, and groups in a wide variety of settings, including in-home and office as well as hospital and outpatient centers, for all age groups. She is experienced in the provision of therapy for depression, bipolar and mood disorders, schizophrenia, ADD and ADHD, adult living skills, adolescent and childhood disorders including child victims of molestation and adolescent perpetrators, as well as families and individuals involved in substance abuse/addiction. She has worked in the area of medical social work with dialysis and transplantation, home health, and caring for the caretakers.
Claire obtained a Bachelor of Science in Health Education in the secondary schools from Florida State University in 1962. After teaching school for a year, she worked with the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services for several years prior to becoming the first Director of Social Services at a large regional hospital. She returned to Florida State University receiving her Master of Social Work degree in 1980 and then back to Southwest Georgia where she was the Social Worker for dialysis and transplantation clinics in the area. She then entered into providing outpatient therapy at the outpatient facilities for psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals before venturing into private practice and contracting with various agencies providing home health and in-home family counseling and parent support. She was among the first licensed clinical social workers in the state of Georgia having been 'grandfathered' in 1987.
Having been divorced for a number of years, Claire relates wholeheartedly to the financial and time-constraint stresses of combining education and career with single-parenting. She is a life-long resident of the largest city in Southwest Georgia and understands the problems of both city and rural dwelling. As the primary care-taker of 11 years for her paraplegic mother, she empathizes with the problems of the homebound and elderly, as well as their caretaker.s problems and eventual grief.
While combining many therapeutic methods, Claire individualizes a treatment program to the needs, backgrounds, and spiritual beliefs of each person. She is a strong believer in the wholistic approach of treating a person.s mental, physical and spiritual selves and has found this to be the most successful approach throughout her many years of practice.
